Celebrating Africa & the African Diaspora with CultureFest!

PHILADELPHIA – In partnership with Artvolution, the Penn Museum will highlight contemporary and traditional practices across Africa and the Diaspora with CultureFest!, Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 am–5 pm.

Families can explore cultural connections with live performances, interactive drumming and dance workshops, Adinkra symbol painting, an African-inspired marketplace, jewelry-making, and more. The line-up for CultureFest! Africa and African Diasporic Cultures Celebration includes:

10:30 am - 11:00 am Fusion dance performance by Culture Shock (hip hop & African movements)
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Storytelling with Keepers of the Culture
11:00 am – 12:00 pm Pop-up talk with Danny Simmons, artist & activist, on community art practices
12:00 pm – 12:30 pm Bearing Witness: Four Days in West Kingston tour with Lead Curator Dr. Deb Thomas
12:30 pm – 1:00 pm Africa Galleries Tour with Lead Curator Dr. Tukufu Zuberi
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm Interactive dance workshop with Artvolution founder Vena Jefferson
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Storytelling with Keepers of the Culture
1:30 pm – 2:00 pm Drop-in drumming class for everyone (including beginners) with Malidelphia
2:30 pm – 3:00 pm Africa Galleries Global Guide Tour
2:45 pm – 3:30 pm Musical performance by South African Jazz Group
3:45 pm – 4:30 pm Musical performance by Malidelphia

As part of its ongoing Building Transformation project, the Penn Museum has just unveiled more than 10,000 square feet of reimagined spaces, including its new Sphinx Gallery; a suite of Africa Galleries; a Mexico and Central America Gallery; the historic Harrison Auditorium; and its stunning new Main Entrance.
