Harvey L. Stahl, was born in Philadelphia in 1943, and studied physics at the Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University). He served his country as a 2nd Lieutenant in South Korea between May 1967 and May 1968. He was a Transportation Officer in the 8th Army Support Command’s General Staff. He had access to vehicles on the week-ends which allowed him to travel. He also had access to the military base’s darkroom and materials in order to develop, print, and mount his photographs. He displayed his work publicly a few times, always eliciting more interest from Koreans than Americans.

The Harvey L. Stahl Collection includes 48 color 35mm slides, 683 black and white 35mm safety negatives, and 88 black and white photographic prints taken between May 1967 and May 1968 in South Korea and Japan. In addition, the holdings in this collection include images from the Bob Hope Show in Korea, the Korea Trade Fair, and temples in Japan. It also includes images of military vehicles, personnel, and personal photographs of their creator, Harvey L. Stahl in addition to the majority of ethnographic images. All holdings in the Harvey L. Stahl Collection had been housed in Philadelphia while Stahl lived in Great Britain. In 2010 the collection was donated to the Penn Museum Archives.
