Description

Dancer or actress. Standing, frontal figure of woman dressed in long Doric peplos which falls in folds to the ground, exposing only the toes at the bottom. Right hand placed on upper hip. Left hand is held out forward at level of the middle of the waist. Hair: in locks brushed forward on top of head to a thin fillet which is knotted behind; around forehead the hair is parted in the middle and is brushed back horizontally around the sides. A small bun at nape of neck. At shoulders the overfold of the peplos (apotygma) is held in place by a hemispherical button. Original found at the Villa dei Papiri, Herculaneum. Copy of a 5th century Greek work.
