Description

Woman seated on stool with child. Colored black. Child appears bent across woman's body, head and feet resting on her arms. Woman's stool is supported by eight figures around central column. "Goddess of nursing"- from a fetishist sanctuary. Cult figure, perhaps the Mother Goddess, represented as a lady of rank seated in state, and wearing characteristic Dogon coiffure, lip-plug, and earrings. The figures supporting her stool are ancestors, who also receive offerings.
